Distance measuring systems

Distance measuring systems – also known as path sensors, distance sensors or position sensors – are sensors that are used to measure distance. The sensors can record precise distances to a measurement object.
In general, a distinction is made between "absolute" and "incremental" distance measurement. With incremental distance measurement, the measurement is taken from a zero point. By absolute distance measurement, only increase in the distances covered are measured.
As regards the recording of measurement values, a distinction is made between analogue and digital systems. Where an analogue system delivers a constant signal, digital distance measuring systems provide a signal that alternates incrementally.
Distance measuring systems are very versatile and are therefore found in the most diverse fields. The range of applications extends from traditional machine and plant construction and the automotive industry and includes the metal, wood and plastics industries.

With these new measuring and indicator devices, norelem has expanded its product range of distance measuring systems. The battery powered measuring and indicator devices are used to accurately determine positions and angles. The complete distance measuring system consists of a battery powered LCD display, a plug-in magnetic sensor and an incrementally encoded magnetic strip. As an alternative to the incrementally encoded magnetic strips, norelem offers hollow shaft sensors with magnetic sensors. Scanning is carried out using an 18 pole x 5 mm magnet rotor. The distance measuring system is intended for applications including linear and angular measurements on saw benches or for determining positions on boring centres.
The positioning display is powered by normal, commercially available batteries. The sensors are plugged into the back of the display. The display picks up signals from the magnetic strip and converts them into linear data. The spacing between sensor and strip is significant (up to 2 mm), which enables wear-free and low maintenance operation. This additionally makes the system insensitive to dust, swarf and damp. The position indicators are also very easy to operate, allowing parameters such as resolution, offset values and switch-off time to be freely programmed using the keypad.
