Retrospective at the 2012/2013 season
Kaiserslautern KaRaT Racing Team
The KaRaT team is the only one from the Rhineland-Palatinate and consists at present of over 40 students from various faculties of the Kaiserslautern University of Technology and University of Applied Sciences.
They all share one thing in common: enthusiasm for technology and motorsports. This is why year after year since 2007 innovative one-man racing cars are built with the goal of competing in the "Formula Student" competition.
After the team tackled the electric racing car project for the first time during the 2011/2012 season the aim was to learn from the mistakes made in the course of this season and to come up with and to take advantage of further improvements.
On doing so, special emphasis was placed on weight reduction, considering that the Karlsruhe racing car weighed approximately 140 kg more compared to the other electro teams.
Thanks to actions on various aspects the weight was able to be reduced substantially.
This season the team even made use of a home-made battery that reduced the battery weight by 24 kg. This change put the team behind schedule unfortunately and as a result the racing car was unable to start at the event in Hockenheim.
But it was possible to compete in the the race in Barcelona and this demonstrated to the Kaiserslautern Racing Team that they are moving in the right direction.
An early design-freeze is planned for next season.
A few team members were added too to reinforce the project.
norelem wishes lots of success in the endeavour and in addition to it an equal measure of joy and fervour in the project's implementation.
