Engineering Newcomer 2017
Drive unit for rollator wins junior researcher award
For the fourth time, norelem and CADENAS awarded the Engineering Newcomer Award to outstanding university/school projects with the support of Bundesarbeitskreis Fachschule für Technik and Solidpro GmbH. This year, the coveted prize went to Tim Schobel from the University of Stuttgart.
The Engineering Newcomer competition was launched for the first time in 2014 in order to give young talents a chance to present their interesting, self-developed design project to a wide audience. 31 teams from Germany, Austria and Europe as well as other countries from Europe and around the world took part this year. The awards ceremony for this year’s Engineering Newcomer competition was held at the Motek trade fair in Stuttgart on 11 October.

This year Tim Schobel from the University of Stuttgart placed first. He impressed the jury with his project “Design and prototyping of a compact, electric drive unit with free-wheel function for a rollator”. When driving uphill, the drive unit provides the necessary force to drive the rollator independently and serves as a support when going downhill. The user is thus safer and does not have to exert as much effort.

Class TM2C of the Engineering School in Munich garnered the second place award this year. As part of a project entitled “Planning, Design, Production and Programming a 4.0-capable Production Plant”, in the space of nine months, 29 students developed a production plant which will be used in the future for the control and automation technology classroom.

Third place went to the three students Sebastian Benedikt, Pierre Breitwieder and Matthias Henkel of the Engineering School Allgäu Kempten. With their twin wheeler, the students demonstrated both creativity and design skills. The twin wheeler can be used for leisure activities and as a second car.

For the first time this year, the most creative educational institution was selected at the award ceremony based on the Standing List and was rewarded with a prize of 500 EUR. The Standing List is based on the number of submissions an educational institution has made. The institution thus receives one point for each submitted project. The winning schools then obtain additional points depending on the placement and the overall ranking.

We would like to congratulate the Engineering School in Munich, which finished in first place with a total score of 20 points.
