norelem Race Camp 2016

Hot wheels at norelem's first Formula Student pre-event
The norelem Race Camp 2016 quite literally made its mark – leaving tracks on the asphalt, the echo of roaring engines, and a group of students who were thrilled to experience it all. This was the very first time norelem had staged the pre-event, designed to help teams prepare for the international Formula Student competitions. Much to the students' delight, it came as a bonus addition to the sponsorship package norelem provided this season, containing both products and empirical values. The two-day event took place on 28th and 29th June 2016 at norelem's headquarters in Markgröningen and at the racetrack in Bopfingen, near Aalen. The norelem Race Camp gave the teams the opportunity to discuss and compare their approaches with the other teams being sponsored by norelem, put static disciplines into practice and subject their cars to thorough testing.

The norelem Race Camp participants

Eight teams involved in the Formula Student competition took part in the norelem Race Camp. In the previous season, they had benefited from products received as part of sponsorship from norelem, including »Cardan joints, »deep groove ball bearings, »hexagon head bolts and »threaded inserts. The international competition challenges students from all kinds of subject areas to design and build their own formula race car. Also attending the event was the SolarCar Team from Bochum, who presented their ThyssenKrupp SunRiser. We were particularly delighted to see those teams who had travelled from places as far afield as Paderborn and Zwickau – and even Graz in Austria. Some had travelled through the night (or had at least taken journeys which felt that way!) just to make it to Markgröningen for the norelem Race Camp.

Preparation for the static disciplines

On the first day of the event, held in Markgröningen, a test of static disciplines awaited the teams. These disciplines were divided into three categories: engineering design, the business plan and the cost report. A jury panel – made up of employees, Formula Student alumni and associates of the company – was there to grill the students on their work. While the teams were not presenting their static disciplines, they used the time to engage in discussions with other teams and scrutinise their cars and design solutions more closely. "The norelem Race Camp gave us a great opportunity to discuss things with the other teams", said the Formula Student Weingarten team.

Towards the afternoon, the teams and the norelem crew then set off for Bopfingen. Before some downtime, the evening was spent setting out the track and the various slaloms and chicanes it involved. These were designed to prevent the cars from reaching excessively fast speeds – and to put the driver's abilities to the test. The cars remained top of the agenda as the evening progressed, with some teams even staying up half the night to keep building, welding and fine-tuning parts of their cars. We were delighted to see the students express such enthusiasm for and dedication to the project.
