Camera slider project

Construction of a camera slider

As part of a project for his technology management course at the Aalen University of Applied Sciences, student Michael Knoch designed and manufactured a camera slider.
The camera slider that he designed is ideal for photo technology applications. It is used to create time-lapse videos with movement, which gives the shot additional dynamics. It is possible to move the the camera in a linear way, to rotate it or to carry out a combination of the two. Typical uses include nature photography, such as passing clouds, flowing water or videos of sunrises and sunsets.
A single-lens reflex camera moves along a guide rail, driven by a toothed belt with a motor. A mini PC with a touchpad is used to control the device. With a self-written script, it is possible to make all of the necessary settings and to view all information on the TFT display. When a short movement pulse is given, a trigger signal follows for the camera. After a short waiting period, the next pulse begins. These processes are repeated until enough image material is available for a video. It is possible to create the video file from the individual images using suitable software.
norelem in the project:
norelem provided various standard parts for this project:

Shaft collars – DIN 705, shape E, stainless steel, which were used for the axial securing of the drive shaft.

Rubber-metal buffers – type D, which were used as feet.

Knurled knob – size 0, M4, stainless steel and knurled knob – size 0, M3x10, stainless steel, which were attached to the 3D-printed plastic housing so that the housing lid could be opened and closed as necessary.

Threaded inserts – stainless steel, M3 including assembly tool for threaded insert M3, which were screwed into the plastic. If the knurled knobs were screwed directly into the plastic, then the threads would wear too quickly in the plastic.
