Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Heidenheim: Milling machine
Design and construction of a 3-axis CNC milling machine
The project group from Heidenheim faced up in their 5th semester to the task of putting knowledge acquired into practice and theory to the test in a group work, designing and constructing a 3-axis CNC milling machine.
The seven group members from Heidenheim set themselves to planning the milling machine with a 1,000 euro budget and four months time.
Scope of the work:
The length or width of the machine had to measure up to 350 mm and the height 400 mm. Moreover, three step motors, a control card for the step motors, a switch-mode power supply, eight limit switches and one PC, plus screen, mouse, keyboard and connection cable, had to be built in.
The objective was to produce a device made of PMMA with a tolerance of 0.2 mm.
PMMA = polymethylmethacrylate (in everyday language: acrylic glass or Plexiglas)
Extra advantage for the project members:
Thanks to this realistic project other segments of working life were mastered as well, like:
- Design
- Production
- Purchasing
- Marketing/advertising
- Manufacturing/manufacturing planning
- Assembly
- Project planning
For the execution of the project the group was assigned to the guidance of several companies, norelem counted among them.
norelem guide shafts and linear ball bearings were selected by the group because on the one hand they have outstanding rigidity and on the other hand their cost is relatively inexpensive compared to other alternatives.
The ball screws used are more accurate than a gear rack or a trapezoidal thread because they have less allowance for clearance.

The group completed the project successfully, finished the milling machine on time and got through their final results presentation.
The members of the project group are Heiko Berger, Alexander Kraussler, Tobias Becker, Katrin Gerstmeier, Jan Kupferschmid, Michael Uhl and Rainer Wiedenmann.
