"Akrobot" system engineering project
of the Hochschule Buchs, Switzerland
In their first year of instruction to become system technology engineers the students of the NTB Interstaatliche Hochschule für Technik Buchs (NTB Interstate University of Applied Sciences of Technology Buchs), Switzerland, get the project task of designing a robot that, together with a partner team of another NTB site, solves a given problem.
The 8-member team headed by Simon Castelberg takes on the challenge and builds one of two collaborative robots that together burst a balloon.
At the start of the event the two collaborating robots are positioned at random spots in the circular field by the organiser (instructor). A balloon fastened to a support structure hovers at a height of 50 cm above the field. The team leaders implant a needle in one of the robots, which cannot be detached by the robots.
The aim is to have the balloon burst within 3 minutes of starting. A maximum of 2 attempts are allowed during the demonstration.
The robots are started manually by pressing the head of one of the robots. Following this, the task is accomplished autonomously.

Two norelem ball wheels are used here in addition to the two drive wheels in order to elevate two additional base support plates. The ball wheels ensure substantial stability. They were fitted on the mountings made for them at the in-house workshop and with them the robot's locomotion operates superbly.
The robot was presented on the evening of 25.06.2013 at the vocational training centre (bzb = Berufs- und Weiterbildingszentrum Buchs) in Buchs, St. Gallen. We congratulate the team on their successful project.
